Background of the Study

Neural efficiency refers to the brain’s ability to process information with minimal cognitive effort. Nigerian Pidgin, a widely used creole language characterized by its fluid syntax and spontaneous use in everyday conversation, offers a unique opportunity to study neural efficiency during natural language production. Recent neuroimaging research suggests that languages with flexible structures may engage adaptive neural mechanisms that facilitate efficient processing (Adebisi, 2023). This study investigates neural efficiency in processing Nigerian Pidgin during spontaneous speech by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and behavioral measures. Participants will engage in free speech tasks, and their neural activation patterns will be compared to those observed during structured language tasks. The goal is to determine whether spontaneous language production in Nigerian Pidgin is associated with more efficient neural processing, characterized by reduced activation in language-related brain areas, and how this efficiency relates to fluency and cognitive load. These findings will contribute to the broader understanding of neural efficiency in language processing and inform strategies for language instruction and rehabilitation (Chukwuma, 2024).

Statement of the Problem

Despite its widespread use, little is known about the neural efficiency of processing Nigerian Pidgin during spontaneous speech. Existing studies typically focus on structured language tasks, which may not capture the naturalistic aspects of language production. This gap limits our understanding of how the brain manages the fluid and dynamic nature of Nigerian Pidgin in everyday communication. Addressing this gap is essential for developing more ecologically valid models of language processing and for designing interventions that enhance language fluency and cognitive efficiency (Adebisi, 2023; Chukwuma, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To measure neural efficiency during spontaneous Nigerian Pidgin speech.

2. To compare neural activation patterns between spontaneous and structured tasks.

3. To assess the relationship between neural efficiency and language fluency.

Research Questions:

1. What neural markers indicate efficiency during spontaneous Nigerian Pidgin speech?

2. How do activation patterns differ between spontaneous and structured language tasks?

3. How does neural efficiency correlate with language fluency?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it explores neural efficiency during spontaneous speech in Nigerian Pidgin, contributing to a more realistic understanding of language processing in naturalistic settings. The results will inform language teaching and clinical interventions aimed at improving fluency and cognitive efficiency (Adebisi, 2023; Chukwuma, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to assessing neural efficiency in Nigerian Pidgin during spontaneous speech among adult speakers, using fMRI and behavioral assessments.

Definitions of Terms:

• Neural Efficiency: The effectiveness of neural processing with minimal cognitive effort.

• Spontaneous Speech: Natural, unscripted language production.

• Nigerian Pidgin: A creole language widely spoken in Nigeria with dynamic linguistic features.
